
Jazmine Sullivan is a native of and lived in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Pam her mother is an ex-backup artist from Philadelphia International Records. Her father gave her an appointment as curator of the Historic Strawberry Mansion. She and her family then moved into the historical landmark. In 2005 she graduated from the Philadelphia High School for the Creative and Performing Arts in the class of a vocal music major. Sullivan began singing in the children's chorus as a contralto, before joining the adult chorus a couple of years afterwards. Sullivan did not get exposed to secular music at first. "I started singing as a soloist in church, and somebody suggested I sign up to gospel records at age 11. However, I was not ready for that," she says. "I got lucky enough to be chosen for in a McDonald's competition, which offered children from major cities the opportunity to perform 'Accept that God is God's Will'. The audience responded well." Stevie Wonder sang her part for the birthday party of her son at the age of 13. Sullivan had signed her first contract to Jive Records when she was fifteen. The label recorded her an entire album. But the album never came out. Sullivan was later removed from the label. The singer maintained a relationship with Missy Elliott she produced several tracks for her debut project, such as the brash single "Backstabbers" composed by Timbaland and written by Elliott.
